Vickie’s story – a family perspective
When Vickie was just six months old, she experienced
infantile spasms that left her with brain damage. As
she grew up, she was diagnosed as autistic, with a
learning disability, and is also partially blind. Despite
the challenges this brought, Vickie’s parents dedicated
themselves to providing her with love, stability, and care
at home.
For many years, family life centred on making sure
Vickie had what she needed. While home provided
comfort, her parents carried a constant weight of
responsibility and worry about the future - how she
could find greater independence, and what would
happen when they could no longer be her main carers.
Everything changed when Vickie moved into her own
home with Active Prospects. Carefully planned with her
and her family, this move gave Vickie the chance to step
into adulthood on her own terms. Her new home offers
both stability and opportunity: a place where she feels
secure, has the right support around her, and can shape
her own routines.

With the encouragement of her support team, Vickie has
been exploring her passions, building confidence, and
enjoying the freedom to make everyday choices - from
how she spends her time to the activities she wants to
try. For her parents, the change has been transformative
too. They now visit and enjoy time together as a family
without the constant pressures of daily care. As her
parents told us,
The support Vickie receives is
incredible. For the first time in
years, we feel she is safe - and that
peace of mind is everything. She is
happy - that’s all you want, for your
children to be happy.”
For Vickie, the move has enabled her to embrace
adulthood and enjoy new independence. For her family,
it has brought reassurance, relief, and the joy of seeing
their daughter thrive in a place she can call home.
