A major achievement was the development and launch
of AI Can, delivered in partnership with the Pro-Active
Community and the University of Surrey. Funded by the
Department for Science, Innovation and Technology,
AI Can is the UK’s first peer-led AI training programme
and digital hub specifically for people with learning
disabilities and autistic people.
It was designed to help people use everyday AI tools safely
and confidently, while also ensuring that people with lived

experience are part of national conversations about digital
inclusion, accessibility and the future of technology. The
Pro-Active Community Member
project positioned Active Prospects and the Pro-Active
Community as leaders in inclusive AI, with growing interest
from local authorities, housing providers, national disability
organisations, educational bodies and researchers.
AI Can has already shown measurable impact. Evaluation
with people with lived experience, support workers and
managers found improved understanding, confidence and
safety awareness after training.
For people with lived experience, understanding of
generative AI increased from 2 to 3.8 out of 5, and
confidence completing online tasks increased from 3.1
to 3.8. Support workers’ understanding increased from 2
to 4.5 out of 5. Across all groups, 100% of post-training
respondents said AI could make everyday tasks easier,
with practical uses including meal planning, shopping lists,
travel planning, emails, easy-read materials, information
summaries and job searches.
This project has improved my
confidence in using technology,
as well as my technical and public
speaking skills.”
